The device would work by using dry powder insulin from a blister pack, released using an inhaler. The inhaled form offers a short-acting insulin boost but could easily reduce the number of injections normally required (for Type I diabetes) from the current average of six down to just one or two, daily. This technology has been on the horizon for some time now, but it’s nice to see it finally heading towards medical licensing and approval, as it will provide a much-needed alternative to the frequent injections that are the norm.

Trend: Object Segmentation
Object Segmentation is one of the most prominent trends in Systematic
Innovation. It describes an evolution of products and processes starting
with solid matter and then moving to liquids, gases and finally fields. Each
step in this direction can deliver significant benefits. In this case the
insulin has evolved from being a liquid to a gas. The advantages gained are
very clear. The inhaled insulin is less intrusive, easier to carry around
and provides better dosage. Another important benefit is the need for a
single system instead of the normal 2 (insulin flask and needle). In short,
inhaled insulin is a far more convenient solution.

A new type of fibre-reinforced bendable concrete will be used for the first time in Michigan this summer. Developed by University of Michigan scientists, the new concrete looks like regular concrete, but is 500 times more resistant to cracking and 40 percent lighter in weight. Tiny fibres that comprise about 2 percent of the mixture's volume partly account for its performance. Also, the materials in the concrete itself are designed for maximum flexibility. Because of its long life, the Engineered Cement Composites (ECC) are expected to cost less in the long run, as well.

Trend: Dynamization
The dynamization trend is certainly one the most popular ones. Many products evolve from immobile, over jointed to complete flexibility. You can measure with a ruler, a folding ruler or a tape ruler. You can cut with a knife, use scissors or apply wire cutting. Even busses added a joint to have larger, still manoeuvrable city busses. Car manufacturers are even exploring the jointed car! This car is compact within the city and offers more comfort at full length on highways.

This could be the ultimate house hold spray. The coating spray claims to kill bacteria and germs with room light, to
eliminate smells, to break up pollens causing allergy, to filter UV and to reduce formaldehyde in your room. The spray on the picture is designed for coating fabrics, so you can coat almost everything in your house. The coating last up to 30 times of machine washing. There is also a variant for glass and a paint variant.

Trend: Segmentation - Liquid
A lot of products, both solid and liquid, offer new benefits and applications when being segmented. A coating spray, just like a metal spray, offers a better user friendliness, easier dosing, better surface coverage and you can do more with less.

Good news for people who be incommoded by insects. Mortein Fly & Insect Killer with Insect Seeking Technology uses statically charged droplets of spray to seek out flying insects and eliminate them quickly; before they can spread disease or cause discomfort. The particles of spray are actually statically charged so that they are attracted to flying insects in the air!

Another self-function is obtainable for people who want to have a hot meal in their car without going anywhere or cooking anything at home. This packaging appears to make a hot meal in about 10 minutes by just pressing a specific place on the packaging.

For those who like more cold drinks, there's finally a real, working, practical self-refrigerating can. The Instant Cool Can (I.C. Can™) uses a 100% safe and environmentally friendly self-refridgerating process that cools by using brilliantly simple water evaporation. In fact, it's proven to lower beverage temperature by a minimum 30° F (16.7° C) in just three minutes.

Ideal solutions do things themselves
Ideally we achieve desired functions without cost or harm, then we often derive statements like ‘the system achieves the function itself', or ‘the problem resolves itself'.

Crispy pizza's from microwaves
This month we selected the submission of Pieter Michiels from Europal. Many people have a "love-hate" relationship with their microwave -- they love the reduced cook times and quick reheat features, but they would like the ability to brown or crisp foods and they would like a broader variety of microwavable products. Consumers are about to get what they wish, thanks to a new packaging technology developed by Graphic Packaging International. The packaging, called Quilt Wave(TM), has laminated cells, or "quilts," which expand when exposed to microwave energy and come into contact with the food product. This hot surface immediately next to the food drives away moisture and creates both maximum browning and crisping.
The advantages of Quilt Wave(TM) packaging include: generating high heat to crisp and brown many food products, including
sandwiches, hand held entrees, pizza, and finger foods; dissipating heat quickly, so it's not hot to the touch and is very
safe to handle and can be used as a cooking utensil to heat the food, and consumers can
eat from the package its convenience appeals to our "grab and go"
society.

Trend: Mono-bi-poly various objects
Normal pizza boxes are nowadays a single system often made out of plain cardboard.
Packaging designers should consider adding one or more other systems and/or functions. This pizza box allows you to heat your pizza in the microwave; without loosing the crunchiness. Adding an extra function can have a lot of advantages such as, that you increase system functionality, increase operability, increase user convenience, reduce packaging, synergy effects, reduce number of systems and reduce net system size.

"Systematic Innovation" seminar (June 29th & 30th)

" Motivating, fun, appropriate, benefit driven and powerful "
Pieter H., Capgemini, The Netherlands |
The next two days seminar on the CREAX Systematic Innovation Methodology takes place on the 29th and 30th of June at the CREAX HQ’s in Belgium. Please find more details on:

Upcoming events
The next couple of months are proving to be very busy months for CREAX. We have been invited to several conferences for presenting the CREAX Systematic Innovation method. You can meet us at the Consumer Trends (Innovations) conference in Moscow on 7-8 June or the iGMO Summit on Growth Management on June 9-10 which is organised by Vlerick Management School and will be held in Oostende. We will also be keynote speaker at ISC’2005 on the 9th of June in Berlin and also at the European TRIZ Congress / QFD Symposium in Frankfurt on June 30th. Come and join us at one of these events!
